Setec - CHAdeMO V2L

For those of you that visited this site in the past, I was reselling the Setec unit in the US. I'm no longer selling the equipment, but here is an archive of all the information have on the Setec V2L unit. Any previous customers may continue to reach me for support.

Setec manufacturers a 3kW and 6kW version of their system. It is desinged for 220Vac output using a single phase inverter. This work really well in other parts of the world. I have met many people in EU and Austrailia that have had good results with the product. In the US, we use split-phase 120Vac/240Vac, so it does not work well with US appliances or homes unfortunately.

It has worked very well for me as a V2L device, but I would not recommend this device for V2H. It does not have any North American safety certifications, such as UL or CSA. In addition, if you are considering connecting it to your home as V2H system, please note there potential safety issues regarding grounding, as it does not have galvanic isolation. Reminder it does not work on Model Year 2011 or Model Year 2012 Nissan LEAFs (see EV page).

Videos of demonstrating the Setec system - you can find additional videos on the EV Siphon youtube channel.

This is a 3kW version modified for 120Vac at about 25amps

FAQ

Can I connect it to my home panel?

No, it is not designed for this purpose. If modified outside of the warranty for the device and the vheicle, it may be able to be connected to a transfer switch.

No, this is a vehicle-to-load (V2L) device, similar to a portable generator that can provide mobile power, or power for an emergency black out. It is not designed to be wired to a home electrical panel as a Vehicle to Home (V2H) system. V2H units are considerably more expensive that require a licensed electrician for installation, city permit and utility interconnection approval. V2L is a simpler, cheaper and portable application.

Which EVs does the Setec V2H unit work with?

In North America the available models with compatible CHAdeMO port are:

  • Nissan LEAF (model year 2013 or newer)

  • Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

  • Mitsubishi iMiev

  • JdeMo installations (some)

Is this the same as connecting to the 12V battery?

No, this connects directly to the high voltage battery via the CHAdeMO port. It is possible to connect an inverter to the 12V battery, which is a clever solution, but the amount of power you can take is limited by the smaller DC-DC converter.

Can I charge my with it?

No, this is only for discharging DC to AC. However, you can charge another person's car with it. Right now with Level 1 charging, and working on Level 2 charging.

Is it safe to use indoors?

Yes. Unlike a gasoline generator that produces harmful carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, this can be used inside your garage.

Can it work with other cars?

Not yet. CHAdeMO is the only charging protocol capable of V2H functionality today. CCS protocol is working on it (and has been for years). We hope they figure it out one day and expect compatible products in the coming years.

How long can it power equipment?

Depends on how much energy you’re pulling and for how long.

Example:

  • Fridge: 1.2kWh/day

  • TV: 1.9kWh/day (1.3amps x 120V = 156W x 12 hours).

An older Nissan LEAF with a 24kWh battery could easily run these devices for 5 or 6 days.

Does it damage the battery?

Depends on how much energy you’re pulling and for Studies show minimal impact from V2G or V2H, and even potential benefit in some cases. This type of product is very common in Japan. However, please note that Nissan and Mitsubishi have not endorsed this product or approved its use. It is not covered by OEM warranty and to be used at your own risk.
